Dr. Christoph Dieterich

Dr. Christoph Dieterich studied Technical Biology at the University of Stuttgart and Bioinformatics at the University of York. For his PhD in Bioinformatics, he moved on to the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Molecular Genetics in Berlin, where he developed computational approaches to study transcriptional gene regulation at the level of individual binding sites and networks. From 2005 - 2009, he performed his postdoctoral work at the MPI for Developmental Biology in the Department of Evolutionary Biology, where he oversaw several genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics projects. In 2009, he became a scientific platform leader (Bioinformatics) at the Berlin Institute for Medical Systems Biology.  Since August 2013, Dr. Christoph Dieterich is leading the Bioinformatics group and core facility at the MPI for Biology of Ageing in Cologne.

Previous scientific achievements

Dr. Christoph Dieterich has been involved in several genome, transcriptome and proteome projects and the corresponding tool kit is actively maintained in the Dieterich Lab. Moreover, the Dieterich group has established methods to QC and process short read data, to detect nucleotide variants and to study small ncRNAs. Lately, we have been implementing computational approaches to characterize protein-RNA binding events and setup a repository for these interactions (dorina.mdc-berlin.de).

Current projects

The Dieterich Group is focusing on aspects of post-transcriptional gene regulation in the Sybacol consortium.  We integrate expression data from mRNA and small RNA-seq experiments to identify common signatures across different “ageing” mutants and underlying pathways. We seek to interlink our insights from different species and try to assess and predict possible outcomes on and interactions with the proteome and metabolome level.
